    The Team Selection P

**EDIT** - The team selection process has been changed. As a result, statements made in the original post may not apply. It's been discussed among the admins and it has been decided to allow returning members to keep their team from last season if they so desire. If not, returning members will be put into the draft pool with 5 lottery balls. So, returning members, I need you to edit your posts and let me know if you're keeping your team from last season. My apologies for any confusion and to those disappointed by the change.

I know there is a lot of interest in how team selection will be done. In the past, there have been a few different ways it was done. One way was allowing returning members to keep their same team. While this was great for them, it really wasn't fair to other members that wanted to play with that team. Ask MGM about the baseball Cardinals. :) Another way was doing a random draft. That leveled the playing field for everyone but it did nothing to reward returning members. Even when draft order was based on W-L records, those that were consistently good were always near the bottom of the draft order and made it near impossible for them to get the team they wanted.

Hopefully, what I've come up with should be fair to returning members as well as giving new guys a chance a their team and encouraging them to return.

It will be a NBA lottery-type draft that will give better odds to returning members but doesn't eliminate the possibilty of a new guy getting a high draft pick. Here's how it works.

I will post a list of prospective team owners in random order. Each prospective owner will get either 5 lottery balls, 3 lottery balls, or 1 lottery ball. The criteria for the number of lottery balls you get is as follows:

5 Lottery Balls: Returning Madden League member and member of at least 2 other LG leagues in good standing.

3 Lottery Balls: Member in good standing with history of 3 current or previous leagues.

1 Lottery Ball: New members with participation in 2 or fewer prior leagues.

Members not in good standing, ie less than 80% reliability meter, not completing a prior league, etc. may have one ball removed from their total. This will be done at the commisioner's discretion on a case by case basis.

    Here's an example:

In the interest of simplicity, I will use a ten player league.

Players A, B, C, D, & E are returning Madden league members and have played in 2 other leagues. These five players get 5 balls each.

Players F, G, & H are first timers to the Madden league but played in the hockey and baseball leagues last season and are in good standing.

Player I has been in three leagues but didn't finish the season in one of them. Normally, he'd get 3 balls but will have 1 subtracted, leaving him with 2 lottery balls.

Player J is new to the site and wants in. He gets 1 lottery ball.

Add all the balls up and it comes to 37 total lottery balls for all 10 players.
    Players A-E (5+5+5+5+5=25), Players F-H (3+3+3=9), Player I (2), Player J (1).

I generate a random number sequence using the generator at random.org.

    I get this sequence:

    35 21 20 18 6 10 14 37 30 12 34 22 19 17 3 7 28 9 33 25 29 32 24 4 2 36 5 26 16 1 8 13 31 15 23 11 27

In this scenario, the following would apply:

    Player A - 35 21 20 18 6
    Player B - 10 14 37 30 12
    Player C - 34 22 19 17 3
    Player D - 7 28 9 33 25 29
    Player E - 29 32 24 4 2

    Player F - 36 5 26
    Player G - 16 1 8
    Player H - 13 31 15
    Player I - 23 11
    Player J - 27

After assigning the lottery balls, I would generate another random sequence for the draft order using the same 37 lottery balls. These are the results.

    34 8 37 2 11 13 30 27 19 33 25 18 24 31 15 16 29 21 4 20 1 28 35 32 3 6 5 14 26 9 36 23 10 7 12 22 17

So, using these numbers, the draft order would be this:

    Player C [34] - 5 balls
    Player G [18] - 3 balls
    Player B [37] - 5 balls
    Player E [2] - 5 balls
    Player I [11] - 2 balls
    Player H [13] - 3 balls
    Player B [30] - 5 balls
    Player J [27] - 1 ball
    Player D [33] - 5 balls
    Player A [18] - 5 balls

As you can see, players with 5 balls got three of the top four choices. However, they also were 9th and 10th and finished behind the guy with just 1 ball. If a player's number comes up who already has a draft position, I simply move on to the next number.

All in all, I think it's fair and it rewards returning and existing league members. And for the record, I will enlist the help of two outside parties during this process so that no one can suggest the results were manipulated in any way.

If you've been in 2 leagues then you'll be in the 3rd group, if you've been in 3 leagues or more then you'll be in the 2nd group.

If you've been in the 2k league 52 times then that counts as 52 leagues.

Look, we realize this is different then how we normally picked teams here but we think it is fair to everyone. Its fair to the returning vets because they have a much better shot at picking the team they want. Its also fair to new people because they dont automatically get stuck with the worst team in the league.

I really wish people would give it a chance before jumping to conclusions.

Yes we keep track. You're both in 3 that i see real quick so you'll be in the middle group.

Look at your MyLG page to see your league history.

No bud, it's leagues period, not the different kinds of leagues. Like Drake said, if you play in the same league 52 times, you have been in 52 leagues.

Once signups close, I'll look at who gets how many balls ASAP.

ok guys its no secret that you are both 2k supporters and were saddened to see the NFL pursue an exclusive deal with EA , but please tell me that this entire season will not be filled with comparisons / complaining / whining as that kills the fun for everyone.

If they hadnt dumped the price on the series perhaps they would still be in the mix...

2k5 was the only football game to out sell Madden so EA got scared and bought up the NFL rights.

only when Bowdown and I play together will we complain ok..promise.

dont worry im sure madden is perfect..

For those that didnt notice there was a change to the team retention process. Please re-read Sarge's original post, returning owners will now have the choice to keep their current team.
