I agree. It is a stupid move. I'd rather pay more upfront than be locked in for that long. I understand the reasoning and it is a good one if you didn't have to committ to a decade and a half. Plus the Isles still have 2 seasons with DiPietro restricted. This is another example of why Lamoriello is the best.
Does anyone know if under the CBA if the guarenteed part will affect their (Isles) cap if/when he retires? If it won't affect their cap then I guess this is just money being thrown away by the owner, but if not it can really handcuff them down the road. Not to go too far off topic being that this is an NHL free agent thread, but this is like the long term contract that the Bengals gave Carson Palmer last year... then he blows his knee out the next game in the playoffs. Granted he is back playing already but still.
Except in the NFL, money is not guaranteed except the signing bonus. Which was $15 million. The Bengals can cut Palmer at anytime now that he is healthy if he doesn't come back the same from that injury.
