    Back during Roberts Rebellion, once the Lannister army arrived in Kings Landing, Tywin ordered The Mountain (the guy Oberyn was fighting) to kill the princess (Oberyns sister) and her kids. He also raped her before killing her. So during the trial by combat Oberyn was trying to get a confession out of The Mountain, hence why he was taking his time killing him. Obviously he got his confession but at the cost of his life.
