    Defense against the

OK, since this move is prone to cause a few problems for everyone, I thought we could have a thread dedicated to killing that move everytime.

    - Never be defensively overaggressive (missing a check) to the point to create a breakaway situation for the other team.

    - Try to check from the glove side across the net to hit the attacker

Am I way of base? or do any of these strategies have any merit?

I rarely try and body check with my defensemen. I don't try and stand anyone up on the blue line.

Instead, I skate backwards with them and pokecheck the guy with the puck to either get him away from the puck or disrupt his move towards the net.

The swoop is more effective on the stick side of the goalie, but it can be performed on both sides of the net (and both directions on the ice).

But do you go for a check or poke as well if you have to attack horizontally (like if he brings the puck from behind the net and skates in)?

I do both, poke or hit, each situation calls for one or the other, just don't through your guys into the man with the puck like darts or he will probably be in home free with the goalie.

If someone is trying a wrap around or trying to skate horizontally through the crease (neither of which is the dreaded "swoop" but both are still a way to score on the stick-side of the goalie) I'll try and body check and/or poke check.

Also, I've been messing around with the advanced controller scheme and it's very nice. There's a seperate function for poke check and hook, so it helps cut down on the penalties. :)

i always leave one defense man to do nothing but stay in the goal with my goalie when someone is approaching, haha. and i always try to poke check with my other defenseman. and if he gets thru my first defenseman, i will have my "double goalie" team there to stop it everytime.

seems to work. kinda cheap though, but hey, it works, and its legal.

I always bump my team agressiveness way down before starting the game (online setup page thingy) which seems to help keep the defencemen from pinching in too far.

Thats the same thing I try and do. It's always nice to line him up with a sweet body check though.

skate backwards and poke check...simple as that....works for me anywho....

edit: it would be sweet if the goalies could like learn as the game goes...like if u try 10 swoops in row in will pick up on it and easily block FORCING you to try new things
