AHL! Please take the time to read over this and vote. Feel free to leave comments and kick ideas around! This has been posted in the manager's boardroom and we want the player's feedback!

Brodie and I spoke the other day about an idea that came across in the forums. We spoke for quite a while hammering out different scenarios and trying to make this new idea become a reality. It all started after a comment from @l 17 l .

"I'd agree that the game should either be Monday at 11 or Tuesday/Wednesday at 9.

OR why not just make games Sunday-Wednesday 9, 10, 11. You shorten the season by 2 weeks. Each player gets 4 games a week. You can then most likely fit a 4th season in each years game, or do an international tournament to end the year that includes all players." - l 17 l

I won't kill everyone with a Lou post, so I'm going to make this short and sweet. After Batman's post above, Brodie and I came up with an idea he would like me to pitch to all of you. In BOLD will be the changes.

Beings it's almost guaranteed we are removing the Thursday game, a league week will be Sunday to Wendesday with the games times being (all levels) at eastern times:

    NHL 9 - 10 - 11
    AHL 8:45 - 9:45 - 10:45
    CHL 8:30 - 9:30 - 10:30

Everyone will be eligible to now play 4 games a week. This will eliminate two weeks from the regular season, giving us a 7 week season. Here are the dates that we came up with throughout a calendar year of NHL :

    S28 : October 8th - December 21st
    S29 : January 14 - March 29
    S30 : April 30 - July 5

I'll point out the pros for this for those that won't read everything (TLDR). The only CON I see in all of this, is the longer nights. The rest, for me, seems to be a very good upside to this.

    PROS :
1.) Extra day off a week for managers, Thursday/Friday/Saturday would be off days.
2.) Season is cut by two weeks. I mentioned to Brodie, from my personal experience, that it always seems to be around Week 5-7 when I start asking myself, "When will this season be over?"
3.) Our final season ends July 5th, allowing lots of time before the next title release. MANY points to go through in this one. Summer season is always labeled as the "AIDS Season", this may help that case with it ending earlier than a normally end date of Mid August (Finals). To think that we'd already be halfway through our summer season right now.
4.) I've noticed that some people may only be able to play certain times all week due to work. Some can only play early, some may only be able to play late. This lays out an even amount of those times, rather than have a scattered schedule during the week.
5.) With the amount of time we leave ourselves at the end of S30, it opens the door to run special events. Internationals? Any other cool ideas. Or nothing and play the next title's beta

    Thanks,

    Brisan

I like the concept of this and definitely wouldn't be opposed to trying it out.

A major issue here will be ECU's at the NHL level. That's the first thing that pops out at me from your post. When I'm not management and I'm not scheduled, I'm rarely on. With this suggestion you will really by relying on a low number of AHL TC players to fill in at the NHL level, and the same would go for the AHL trying to get ECU's as well.

The other issue would be extremely long nights every night for 7 weeks for management. As evidenced by the lack of games starting on time, it seems like guys are having trouble getting online on time anymore. I think that issue needs addressed and hammered out (i.e. players that are late get a warning for first offense, 2nd offense leads to a player specific penalty, 3rd offense leads to suspensions for the player, so forth and so on) before we get into lengthening an already trying nightly experience.

I'm not against this idea, but those are the issues that come to mind when I initially read this. I'm open to trying it, but I think my second point needs seriously addressed and maybe to help management get ECU's we could have a locker room tool that shows us what players we have at lower levels schedules to see if said player will be available rather than thumbing through the list of games and trying to figure it out. (Management can see a list of players and see if and what game times they are scheduled for in lower leagues. The information wouldn't be available early, just when schedules are released normally but something that can be used for quick reference.)

I know this was lengthy so thanks for reading if you made it this far!

100% agree with legacy on ECUing at nhl level will be an issue. As legacy said most guys aren't on nights they don't play not just managers so usually the same guys playing ecu for the NHL.

POTENTIAL FIX* switch AHL and CHL times to keep the 30 minute stagger in game times.

Although Initially I like the season being cut by 2 weeks the more I think of it I'm less sure whether it's good or bad for the site. If a 3rd season is aids imagine a 4th!

My 3rd and final thought is late game availability. I think more times guys want games earlier as opposed to later (a few exceptions obviously but like I said generally it's late games that are an issue as most of us work... and the ones that don't are young and have bedtimes and such)

POTENTIAL FIX* have the late game moved to an earlier game (8 est as opposed to 11)

    TL;DR

    Pros:
    -more hockey games
    -Shorter seasons
    -no dreaded Thursday game

    Cons:
    -potentially less site traffic
-availability (big differ between 7/9 and 6/9)
    -late games resulting in ecus/ffs

Do these future season time lines include playoffs? Example for S30, does regular season end July 5th or would that be the playoff end date? Reason I ask is because with this current timeline, your talking about a lay over of roughly 45 days from the end of S30 until the new NHL comes out which is usually mid September. Not to mention bidding and everything, you'd be looking at least 60 days between end of S30 and start of S31. That's going to kill traffic on the site IMO. Maybe throw an international tournament after S30 so there will still be more generated traffic on the site until S31. I don't know if I'll even be playing LG by this timeline but a 60 day layover seems like a lot in between those two seasons. Obviously I'm looking super far ahead but I could see that be a drawback right now

The dates include everything, brodie roughly figured it out before I posted this. There would most certainly be some kind of league/event at the end of the game Year.

Love the idea, I think its worth at least.one trial season because we can sit and talk about what it might be like but won't know until we do it, I would love an extra game a week! Lol

Like others said, almost every night ECUs are being used, and games run for 30-40 minutes, meaning every game would start late as soon as the NHL needs an ECU and takes a guy scheduled in the AHL because nobody else is on. If anything I'd see the times as:

    NHL: 9PM - 10PM - 11PM

    AHL: 8:30PM - 9:30PM - 10:30PM or 9:30PM - 10:30PM - 11:30PM
(second option runs a higher risk of lower availability with banana leagues that a large amount of AHLers participate in.)

CHL: 8PM - 9PM - 10PM or the same as NHL times. (Lets be honest, NHL team don't want CHL TC players to ECU for them, this allows AHL players to play for the NHL before their game which helps with the skill level of games not being dragged down because a horrible CH player was the only one not in a game.

@LG McDonald please finalize a decision BEFORE AHL bidding starts. Some players decide on a league because the game times fit their personal schedule or preferences. If CHL games are effectively going to be at the same time as AHL games, some CHL players may choose to enter AHL bidding.

You might also consider how having CHL game times overlap with AHL will impact ECU availability for AHL games during the summer season.

I might be in the minority but moving games earlier than 9 pm for some of us is not doable. I dont know the %, but anyone that has young children it will be impossible to make those games.
How many currant management teams would be able to get on and get their teams together that early? I think having this schedule would create more ff games.

Tons of valid points by all and I wanted to chime in as well. When this idea was presented to me I was bit leery simply because for the last 6 years of my life being involved with this community we have used the same schedule and weekly timeline. It is unusual to to think that changing this could possible be a benefit.

I don't want to take this discussion completely sideways, but to a certain extent I see what girgs is getting at. Many of the top tier players don't commit the same amount of time to NHL and that is based around how the game plays. I respect that and can understand it to some degree. I very much enjoy how NHL 14/15 played on the Xbox 360, and being a part of the direction of the NHL series I continue to push as much as I can to ensuring the future of the franchise returns to that familiar place. With that being said, regardless of how good/bad the NHL title is, LG will continue to operate until the day we don't have anyone left to play hockey with.

Say what you want about this website and League but I believe us as a community have endured a ton of issues and have continued to come together giving us the only reason why we buy the game and play NHL anymore. I think the people we have here, the friendships many have created and the desire to play hockey continues to be a major contributing factor as to why LG continues to remain successful regardless of the product EA produces.

Comparing the seasons we had in VHL, and the first two season of the merge(17,18) to current day is extremely difficult to do. The most sign up numbers I have ever had in a season would have been LGHL S18, at ~3850. Last season(s26) we accomplished ~3600. If we talk retention rate of players I have no clue but could assume it would be around 60% from season to season. S18 was nearly three years ago, and my knowledge of the players and skill base in the League was much better than it is today. I had a lot of experience with the same faces in our leagues that it became very easy to judge the level of skill and depth the league had. Currently with the rate the League continues to grow, and priorities in my life shifting away from playing as often as I once did I am very out of tune in regards to what level of talent the League has lost, and since replaced by the new generation of players. I could assume before LG did have more player skill depth compared to present day. I also could assume that no EASHL in NHL 15, the slow direction EASHL has gone since NHL 15 has taken some of top tier players away from NHL and onto other games that offer more of a competitive experience. To say LG hasn't been affected would be ignorance, but I still believe the continues to take steps forward every season and every game. Considering that last season on Xbox was only 200 player short of the all time record of players we ever had in and Xbox league and our PSN league was also over 3000 players, once could assume we are growing exponentially.

    Moving onto this topic and this idea of change, I do see some benefits to making a change of this nature. I also see a ton of wiggle room in @Brisan66 idea for minor adjustments to perhaps met the needs of the community. I think it is safe to agree the majority of players like ONLY having to commit Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed to LG! Many people may see losing the Thursday game as limiting players, but what could be considered is that Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed are all DRASTICALLY better days for availability that perhaps this benefits more teams and players than we could imagine. Once again there are some pretty cool adjustments we could make such as;

    • For those of you whom don't like the idea of playing four games a week, there is nothing saying we can't leave the season length along, play 3 games a week between Sun-Wed. We could do a Sun-9/10 Mon 9/10 Tues 10/11 Wed 9/10/11
    • But if we feel like cutting the seasons shorter, and having fun World Cup Events during the summer months, 4 games a week is the way we buy time. 4 games away saves us 6 weeks at the end of the season which basically means the playoffs of summer season would end Mid/start of July.
    • If 8:45-9:45-10:45 are all too close for NHL ECUs we could look at 8:30-9:30-10:30 for our AHL times. That would apply to a 12 game week or a 9 game week.
    • AHL 9 game week; Sun-9:30/10:30 Mon-9:30/10:30 Tues-9:30/10:30 Wed-8:30-9:30-10:30
    • AHL 11 Game week; Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-8:30/9:30/10:30
    • NHL 11 Game week; Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-9-10-11
Here are some of the benefits I see from making this adjustment:

    • SManagers would only have to organize their players four times a week. Having three managers on a team could mean that that is only once a week.
    • This would free up a extra day for trading
    • It is an extra rest day away from the busy side of LG which tends to be game nights
    • It allows Thursday to be left wide open for replays and reschedules
    • It allows LG to dedicate a complete two days to the e-Sports Hockey League. We can really showcase the best of the best competing at that level.
    • Gives staff an extra day to organize and handle complaints which should make the league run even smoother.
    • A seven week season compared to a nine week season doesn't require as much commitment. Many managers feel tired and burnt out after a nine week season. Shorting that by one day a week, and two weeks a season could drastically lower the "burn out" some managers feel.
    I can see some potential issues with this as well;
    • Player's availability could be an issue
    • 8:30 maybe too early for the AHL
    • Three games in a night could be more work than five days a week(unlikely)

I think the four game nights a week benefits LG as a whole. It allows for fast pace weeks for our LGHL brand, it allows for dedicated days for events like e-Sports Hockey, CanAm, etc, less commitment from our players and managers and potentially takes games away from a day that is notorious for being a poor availability day for many players.

This idea overall is an excellent idea, its just the minor details that need to be debated and reviewed. Things like is 8:30 good for the AHL? Is a seven week season more beneficial? Could we run fun events and tournaments during the additional six weeks we save from having seven week seasons? Is there any site improvements would use to better support this idea(ECU on Call for scheduling?)

I am curious to see more opinions so please by all means give your thoughts. Tell me what you like, what you don't like and what you feel could work best.

    Thanks

If one game a day is too early for some people (8:30) there are still 2 other games that night. It wouldn't really hamper a person's ability to play their games every week unless they have really terrible availability to begin with.

Like I said, I'm for the idea, but I'd like to see some league adjustments for things before we make a change. They were previously stated so I'm not going to type them all again, but I for one miss the NHL 14/15 days not just for the better gameplay, lobbies, etc, but people not just blatantly abusing things to start games late. And whether managing at the AHL level and getting guys ready to ECU for the NHL, or waiting for a guy to come back from his game because I need him, it wasn't as big of a hassle. Games can't possibly run 15 minutes apart from each other or we will be really limiting teams abilities to get a decent ECU or anyone at all for that matter. That in turn will accomplish the opposite of the previously stated intent of changing rules to decrease forfeits.

Moving the Thursday game to another day is good. 3 games a night tho could be tough. Won't know unless we try tho.

One issue i see is if same line is scheduled for 3 games in one night, get blown out in game one and someone rages and don't come back. Now more ecus being used.

I'm already missing 1 night a week because I have some other stuff. I'm working, so I couldn't play the late games meaning that I would not be available for 6 games a week.

For me I don't really like the idea and probably have to look for another league if this change is made.

Also, if there is 3 games a night, I think it would cause more problems ... When someone is not available to play (have something else to do) most of the time he can't play the whole night. I'm pretty sure if there is 3 games/night there will be more ECUs.

What about a roster swipe for every team? So everything starts fresh for the first season of each new NHL game?
